You've set the birds off from the background very well -- your skills in B&W always show through.  I'll admit I think the instant before they took off, that moment when they were massed at the end of that small rise, was a more unique and interesting photograph.  I think that's because we commonly see birds flying, but to see them massed together, especially pelicans, is a more rare event.  Nevertheless, you have two very good photographs, and they go well together as a sequence.

This is a wonderful companion piece to the other beach scene with pelicans; one in repose, one in full flight. You could hardly have caught them better.

What a wonderful capture... right time right place with your camera.  Great energy dynamic you captured.  Nice to see the background out of focus, not common in many landscape shots these days...
