I like the timeless classic look that the B & W tones bring, I think the lack of colour also concentrates the viewers attention on the facial features and expression, particularly the friendly looking eyes of John.  The lighting is perfect with a gradation between light and dark that never oversteps the boundaries in either direction in all the places that matter.

Great light and a wonderful expression on a kindly face.  It may seem very minor, but try cropping about 50% or so of the black above the cap and see if it makes any difference to you.
