This is almost the entire image, I cropped a wee bit off. I was

focusing on the Stamen, they were so unusual in their shape. I was

transfixed with these lovely flowers. Because I used Spot Metering

on the Stamen the rest of the flower does not have any distinct

details re the spots on the petals etc. The edges of the petals are

soft as well, but they are part of the DOF as far as I can figure. I

hope you enjoy this image. (MACRO, your comments and visits are

very appreciated, most sincerely, Gail)

Hi Gail,

Good job with the hand held camera and lens.

Using the Canon 100mm at F/2.8 macro assures that you will obtain the finest definition that this lens is capable of producing.

Using the camera and lens at the appropriate working distance and from the best perspective allows you to manage the effective DOF without having to stop the lens down.

The natural blur beyond the scene of interest only adds to the beautiful blend of colors and provides that "soft" look to the scene. The combination of sharp (due to the isolation provided by using F/2.8)elements in focus with the softer elements that are defocused results in a fine presentation here.

Another A++ for my student.

Warmest Regards, Mike

thank you for your critique on this image. You of course know hard I try to do the best with my 100mm Macro. This critique was very encouraging for me, sincere thanks for taking the time to give me your input. I was worried about the DOF, but your explanation makes me feel more confidant.

Most sincerely, Gail

Nice colors, light etc...but what I like in this especially is the composition. the selective focus is perfect. the proportion of pink and green is perfect too...the triangular composition works best for such photos. compliments -koushik

Hi Gail, The blurred BG is what many shooters are looking for besides the obvious subject. Your right this is an unusual looking stamen, and the colors are what steals the show here, imho. Nice macro work Gail.

Gail, as others have mentioned, the selective focus sets the subject apart as does the color difference. Yet the background also provides setting for the subject. Well composed.

I like the triangular composition as well, thank you for mentioning it. It often takes me awhile to decided on a 'crop'. My Dad always tells me to look and see what part of the image is best telling the 'story' and if what I have left 'in' is adding to the 'story'. It often helps me to decide. Many thanks for taking the time to visit and comment, I enjoyed reading your thoughts very much.
