WOW!  This is wonderful.  I watched a TV documentary last night on this very railroad.  Love this image.

Thanks, Bill!  This truly is an engineering marvel.  Fortunately, I was able to be in the very last car (thanks to the tour we were on).  I had hoped to get a picture of the train rounding a bend, but I never imagined I'd find a beautiful setting like this!  It was a great trip, which I would highly recommend!

Perfect composition, great detail.  I especially like the figures standing between the cars... Mike

Bill.....wish I had seen that show!  It's an amazing engineering feat, and to think it was built back in 1900!  Glad you like it!

Dominick!  This, and in fact all of Alaska should be on everyone's bucket list.  It's funny.....for our 30th anniversary we were debating whether to go to Alaska or Hawaii....the only 2 states we hadn't visited.  Hawaii won! But we finally made it to Alaska!

Ruud.....thanks for your visit.....good to hear from you!

Mike......It was a terrible rainy day, although you can't tell it here.  But it really worked to my advantage with this shot because it brought out the colors in the rocks.  I was standing between the last 2 cars of the train when I took this.  I had the best 'view in the house'.  :-)  Thanks!

Fabulous shot.  While I was on a bus tour in this area in 2006, the bus stopped for us to get a shot of this train in the distance and it was a rainy day also. When the bus continued, there was so much fog that we could not see 15 feet in front of us. With some despair I thought I had wasted my money but as the minutes progressed it started to clear and when the tour ended up in Carcross (Yukon)  it was bright, sunny with blue skies and fluffy clouds were dominant. I knew I had to return on my own which I did in 2009.

All the very best,

I keep coming back to this one and every time I do I can't help but imagine some impending disaster.  I know..........I've just seen too many movies about run away trains and bridges being blown up!

Its a fascinating scene and the detail is most impressive, I would imagine that a new image was possible every few minutes on such a journey!

Very well done Christal!

What a great timing! There is a lot to look at, and think how sophisticate the human brain is. Building such a complicated train pass, and your timing shows it in  a very nice  frame /way, all the results, including the people which are using it!A very interesting surrounding /composition, Christal!

Almost toy-like.  There is such an expectant element here, waiting for the train to disappear.  The orange pairs nicely with the green vegetation and anchors with that little patch of orange leaves on the bottom.

Thanks for your appreciation of this!  It does look toy-like, doesn't it?  Actually, it is narrow gauge, but it felt sturdy, and I wasn't the least bit afraid.  But we had a similar experience to what Tony described above.  Much of the trip was in such thick fog that we couldn't see a thing.  Then we'd go around a mountain, and it might clear a little....then back to the fog.  So I didn't get as many pictures as I had hoped.  This looks pretty clear, but this was not what we experienced for most of the trip.  Fog or not.....I highly recommend his trip for anyone who travels to Alaska.  It's an adventure.  Thanks again!

Good Morning Christal, This is an interesting image that I've been looking at for a little while now and at first I wondered is it coming or going from that little hole the mountain? :)  But seriously what I like about this is the people on the train, and the somewhat precarious look about the whole scene. I'm sure its safe, but it does have a somewhat shaky look about it. Overall your image has made me look at it and thats certainly saying something positive. Very nice capture. Take care.

Best Regards,

Holger

I was really amazed to see the old wooden opening into the Mountain!!! I will have to read up on this Railroad and White Pass. I really like your POV, fortunate for you, you seem to have been in the best car for the shot! Quick thinking Christal!

Hi Christal,

This is a beautifully framed (and captured) image. Nicely done! The way you incorporate the rock and track supports into the photo really highlights the remarkable engineering that went into building this structure!

Nice!

Tim

Well done.  Nice composition with the green trees around.  The train is going to venture.  Best Regards,
