Park Avenue in Arches N.P.

chris_conrad

I was inspired by a "Platinum" image that Tom Meyer did of a magnolia--you can check it out here:http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo.tcl?photo_id=1619736(You'll have to scroll down the page to find it...)Anyway, this is a color slide, converted in PS 7--I generally use Channel Mixers/Monochrome from an 8Bit file, but this time, I started with a 16Bit scan, adjusted the Color Balances until it was way too RED, then I coverted to 8Bit. Went to B&W with Channel Mixer/Monochrome (80 Red, 20 Green), and then adjusted Levels separately over the sky, the tree trunk, and the entire "landscape" in the bottom half. Flatten, convert to Greyscale, then to Tritone. I pretty much used trial and error to come up with a pleasing "sepia" tone, mixing various combinations of three colors.

Thanks for checking this out! I worked the tree for hours in PS 7,

and I'm not sure what to think of the end result--I wish there was

greater contrast with the ground at the bottom of the photo, but

darkening the trunk anymore than this caused the loss of all

details.

Also, I darkened the upper branches and tried to blend the darkest

branches into the trunk--does it work? Thanks for any feedback you

might have!

I love the tone and composition. The cloud looks great but the tree looks a little soft, maybe due to compression. Excellent work!
