The swirly staircase works well, also a bit a reminder maybe of Cartier-Bresson's famous photo with the bicycle... To me, it helped setting a sense of expectation. And I'm not being disappointed - the fact that there is nobody there just seems exactly right to me. Maybe because of the contrast of the curve (which seems to imply some liveliness), the round table... it's a scene that should sparkle with life, and yet it doesn't... it gives the photo an extra level of depth to me.

My only point of comment would be the top - I find the top part above the stairs kind of distracting and adding little to the scene. But not too distracting either, so I can also imagine leaving it as it is.

Thank you for your attention and your extensive comments. I agree with you about the top of the image. I have been trying to crop it of and the result didn't pleased me either. So I decided to leave it the way it was/is.
