Sorry Sam, but this looks like it was taken by a camera phone!?! There's a lot of artifacting and shadow noise, without knowing the camera settings I'm not sure where things might have gone awry. Did you perhaps crop heavily into a small part of the original image?

Other than that it would have been good to move yourself so the sign/boat/banner isn't obstructing the shot; it's very overexposed so a bit objectionable. Equally from a compositional point of view, if your subjects are looking out of frame it's more typical to have them closer to the edge they're looking away from; it makes the picture appear more balanced.

Shooting in such bright light can be challenging. A good tip would be to have them face them away from the sun and use fill flash, or get them under some shade; the light has caused them to squint, and there's some harsh shadowing on their faces.

From a more technical standpoint, the photo is quite overexposed; the outfit of the lady on the right is losing details in the highlights. There also seems to be a huge amount of chromatic aberation, but I'm not familiar with the performance of your specific lens and that can be more challenging to fix.

Sorry for it to be such a long list, but if I'm going to offer critique I feel I should at least be honest!

Thanks for posting!

Mark,

thank you very much for your detailed  and well-thought over criticism, which I've appreciated.

I agree with all your points about this shot from the hip under uncontrolled conditions, when good cameras often make cell phone quality images....  the cell phones get better all the time too;-)

That's my two cents.

cheers

Sam
