Thanks for viewing/comments! ... some people like to shoot with wide open f-

stop and ths is one of those shot. Nice but I would have prefer to clos down my

lens to probably f6.3 or more to get the tail sharp ... any though ?

needless to say, what's in focus is very good, but very limited. I think you are better off with the greater dof. You don't seem to lose any sharpness and more of the subject is in focus. I am not a fan of wide open lenses unless the subject is very flat.  G

Thanks Greg & Verena! I share the same thinking, being from the oldschool I close down my lens as much as can and even cut the shutter speed to allow closing down the lens. Depending the distance to the subject the DOF varies greatly and it's always a guess. However, with HB shooting I tend to be very close and I generally like to shoot at F7.1 or more and that's why I've using the 2X TC III with no heartache. When I shoot with the extender (mean that I am much much closer) the DOF is even thinner and I generally like to close to even F9 or more ...just some tidbit (nothing is a rule and each of us to use his own :-) ).

LOL, thanks for the vote of confident Greg & Verena! As for me, I am always thinking that I have to get a better shot, I want to tweak and fine tune. Since you been follow my shots this year you know that I've dumped the extension tube (I mean extension tube in above note, btw - not extender) and use the 2X TC III this year. Partly because it much easier to shoot, I stand almost a mile away (a bit of a an exageration, ok)  and shoot. The shot are not bad, especially with a 2X extender. However, looking back at old shot with the extension tube I still think the detail are more superior. I think it's because I was closer, there's no extra glass of the 2X extender and I was closing down the lens more. Therefore, I am just pondering ... again - Thanks for having a dialog with me with vote of confident & kind words

This shot was done without the extender and it seems to have more clarity and sharpness than one with a 2X TC III but not as good as one with an extension tube + more f-stop (like F9 -F11) is what I see.
