Love the cool feel of this shot.  Good choice of white balance.

I particularly like how crisp the tree appears in contrast of the misty and dreamy background.

Hi Alf,

A beautiful scene well captured.

The use of F/4 with the Nikkor zoom is optimal for both the lens and the Nikon D800 camera.

Using good lens below F/5.6 (like F/8 , F/11/F/16) is not something that Ido not  recommend unless there are requirements like extending exposure times (to record motion blur from water or clouds, etc) or for some lightning shots taken during the day.

Ahhh, simple and so serene.  What do you think about cloning out that little spit of land at the left margin? That would simplify the image even more, but excellent as is.  Of course I'm seeing a strong green cast from my immediate case of envy over your new camera ;-)....  Mike

A beautiful image with a tasteful composition. The tree is stunning as well the montains with reflections on the background.

I like this one most of your recent photos - the clouds covering the mountains convey a sense of distance and depth while the tree in foreground can literally stand out without any disturbing background. The yellowish grass in foreground ("warmth", near the tree) is a well worked out contrast vs. the steel blue distant sky.

I have read a lot about optimal f-stop.  The consensus is that a lens tends to be sharpest at 2.5-3 stops from the maximum aperture.  For the 24-70, most tests show that it is sharpest at f/8.  By the way, nice shot!   

Beautifully composed and interesting too with bits and pieces that personalize it from just a serene nature shot.  The cool blue vs the yellow works nicely with the green as a binder.  Different looking tree -- seems to have experienced surgery surgery man-made or natural?      but ultimately looks happy up top, garnering attention in its liveliness.  I can almost hear the crackling of the vegetation in the forefront.  Lyrical

Great picture with relatively shallow DOF. With an aperture of f4 only the foreground and the left hand tree would be in focus, and this works well for the present scenery where you want the background to disappear in the mist. Well composed and a good color balance. To me the picture tells a story about SOLITUDE. best regards Per.

The downward angle of the trees mimics the visible slope of the hills, drawing the viewer into the depth of the image, there is plenty to see as ones eye moves about the frame taking it all in.  Nicely done!

As beautiful and dreamy as this is, that lone tree creates a bit of tension because of it's sharp and stark shape.  I think that's what makes this work so well.  The scene without the tree would be lovely, but just ordinary.  Not being a Nikon person, I don't know about your new camera, but I'll check it out to see what it is.  Hope you're doing well.  I'm working on retirement myself.....stay tuned!  :-)

i find coffee alleviates the foggy aspect.

Great composition.  The form of the tree is superb, and your decision to cool the light was a good choice in this foggy atmosphere and with gold/yellow vegetation in the foreground (nice color combination).  There's a lot of beauty in this silently slumbering scene.
