Aurora and me

chris_venhaus

Took this one last night with my 10D. I must have run back and forth to my camera and the pier at least 30 times... Just levels adjustment, color temperature adjustment, and sharpening applied...

i really like the shot and i'm jealous that i barely even get to see the stars where i live (nyc); could be a scene in a spielberg flick. i also think the saturated green is fine, because i was lucky to see a green aurora once and your photo just begins to scratch the surface of how awesome a sight it is.

I think it's great that you actually thought to compose a good photo, with the pier, mist, and so on. I think that most people just get excited and think the beautiful colors is enough. Great job!

this is one of the best images I have seen in a while. The composition is great, I'd be interested to see it with some of the sky cropped out. Possibly even crop it to a square losing the tiny detail bottom left.

Really great image you have there. Get it on a book cover soon!

Images do not always have to be full of meaning. Sometimes they record awesome events of nature.

This is a beautiful image. What makes this stand out from other landscapes is the added element of someone sitting at the edge of the pier enjoying the scene as much as the photographer.

I wonder though why a portrait crop was used? I thought that this image was just getting lots of attention and I checked into your portfolio. Amongst other impressive landscapes were other shots of the aurora, all of them with a landscape crop except one. The reason for the exception was obvious, as some additional interesting elements of the aurora were captured because of that choice.

Although the addition of the stars in the heavens is a nice touch, adding an additional sense of placement within the cosmos, the loss of a few of them and some of the lower portion of the pier would not lessen the impact of the image at all. This would allow some more of the aurora stripe across the image.

None the less, this is a very nice image.

My brother just got a new 10d and its amzing at how much you have to scale in order for it even to fit on your screen. Love the green and spacing, the crispness and simplicity.
