I shot this from a relatively low (and cold, wet I might add) position on creaky ice as far out in the Icicle River as I dared go. There is also some flattening effect from the 126mm focal length. I was drawn to the compactness of this scene, with the cantilevered snow and delicate, gem-like icicles, and the fast-moving water with the nice little breaker in the center of the frame. I knew that ss would be critical so I bracketed a string, from a very long (water a silky mass) to a fraction (water appearing like broken shards). This timing gives just enough blur to be pleasing but also freezes the tiny, bright hair-like strands in the breaker. I don't have a formula for this, I wing it every time.
