We attempted to get away from the fires for a weekend and drove for three hours to a trailhead in the North Cascades. It did not make any difference; the smoke and gunk was there waiting for us. This was the scene in the morning, with the sky so red that even the fog, flowing around the side of Lewis Lake below, had a hellish cast to it.
