Franz, I read your "try cropping" above and I understand the problem. Yet, the author of a photograph is probably the last one who can objectively judge whether cutting off something may improve the effect; I believe the problem here is similar to that of reporters having their articles cropped by their director, or of writers having their books or stories cut by the editor. Nevertheless, it has been amply proved that such cuts may well beneficial, no matter how painful they may look to the original author of the article, the book... or the photo. Here, I too believe that cropping the left 15% or so would improve the composition a lot, by having the bird's claw aligned with the diagonal of a roughly square photo. The trouble with photo.net is that we are proposed a composition, and all we can say is "crop" - we can never say "include more" since we don't have a clue to what lies outside of the picture, and most of the times that would be impossible anyway since the photo was taken in Bangla Desh eight years before...

Hey Franz,

I think this is a very impressive photo and very original! Congratulations!

I would tend to agree with Michele in that a small cropping on the left would help. I imagine this was a not an easy shot and if I read correctly it was f4,8 and 1/77 with ISO200. In my screen the focus does not seem the sharpest in the forefront and a smaller aperture could have helped. Of course, this type of afterthoughts don't help much...

It's a beautiful pic.

A square cropping might work well in that it would get rid of that small section of orange color in the lower right that is somewhat distracting and have you focus totally on the bird. I still like this, as is. Very different and makes you look at a part of the bird you don't usually notice.
