On 1 November 1755, the Lisbon huge earthquake destroyed the Church of Conceição Velha. This beautiful portal was all that remains after that. The facade, crowned by triangular pediment, is marked by an ornate Manueline portico, with a tympanum that includes the Virgin of the Misericórdia, and figures of nobles and religious clerics. On this platform is the Virgin Mary, secured by two angels, over figures representing Pope Alexander VI, Father Miguel Contreiras, a bishop and cardinal (all on the right), and Queen Eleonor, King Manuel and two prelated (on the left).

Oh yes, thank you for sharing!

This is close to Terreiro do Paco, right? I recall it was on the list of buildings for the technical tour of earthquake in Lisbon, but I missed the guide and did not know exactly how and so on.

Have I written you that in April I come for another month to Lisbon?

Happy 2013!

Hi Maria! Yes, you are right about the church's position. Very close, in Terreiro do Paço square, we have a new museum called "Lisboa Story Centre" about the history of the town. It's very modern and nice, a really history lesson! I recomend it to everyone interested by this town. About your coming to Lisbon, unfortunately in April I'll be in Paris...anyway, enjoy your time! I also wish you a happy 2013! Best regards.
