This started as a color image, mostly monochrome, but I decided to see what would happen with just monochrome.  The result was 'OK' but lacking depth and texture.

So... I used local tone-mapping to better define the shapes and then added a textured layer beneath which I warped to provide the feel of 'action'.

This is the final result...
