Hello Peter

Hmm. I like some aspects but not others. The moody lighting is nice and it's sharp and has a different look which gets your attention. However the wide angle lens does what it's want to do and introduced relational distortion. It has increased the size of the head of the guitar which is OK but it has also done so with the hand, less so and the subjects head in relation to the body making him look sort of like a bobble head figure, much less so. The wide angle lens because of the distortions gives the image an overall off kilter feel and that contributes to the pose feeling off too. The left hand is on the neck like he's playing but the right is just hanging down, if it was closer to the strings like he is playing it would help. Lastly the subject is looking off to the light source and with this pose I think would be better looking at the guitar cord. So for me at least it doesn't coalesce into a convincing result. Certainly I'm not a expert and I'm just offering my observations, others might disagree. I just feel since this is a request for a critique it's more helpful to be specific rather say nice job or doesn't work for me. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

Regards

Greg, Thanks very much for the input! (which as you correctly assumed is what I want). For me the wide angle distortion was intentional to give it a more dramatic and slightly offbeat impact but as you say the guitar head is too large (I guess it might have been a good Gibson ad). You are right about my right hand but I wasn't intentionally trying to portray that I was playing the guitar but actually just posing with it. But in that case my left hand should have had a more relaxed position instead of what I have so I agree again with your assessment.

As for looking at the light source I do have other shots where I am looking at the camera as well. I chose this one because it has a dramatic (and yes posed) look. But I understand your point about looking posed because I didn't clearly portray that the shot was not about actually playing.

Your calls are all good and right on and I very much appreciate them. It tells me that I have to  plan out a little more clearly what my actual intention of the image is to be.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays :)

Peter
