A critique would be appreciated, also I had a hard choosing a category.

There are a lot of abandoned farm houses where I live. If there is a better

category from the list please indicate.

Thank you,

Kyle Bybee

I was about to suggest a crop to this image when I browsed your portfolio and saw the one I liked. To my mind, this photo is a bit unbalanced with the large mostly blank wall to the left. So I agree with your other image (004) to handle this as a vertical. I'd like to see more. Old farmhouses and rusty stuff are my favorite subjects. Cheers, Steve

Hello Kyle

Old buildings are really interesting. I find this one tells more of story if you will, than the closer cropped one. If the title on this one was different it might change the perception  of it. If it's called flaky door the viewer will consider the door to be the subject. If it was called something else or even had no title the viewer I don't think would consider the door to be the subject of the photo. It's part of the photo and it's interesting but it's an element rather than the subject of the photo. As for the composition it is close to the edge and I imagine the open door just to the right of it necessitated the way it is cropped. The expanse on the left side helps to act as a counter weight to the door but can't quite compensate. I don't know if you opened the door to get the light on it to show the texture or not. For this framing I think the balance would work better if the door was partially closed. Say only 1/4 open. Then it would have less weight and the angle would point the viewers eye through the doorway into the kitchen and would "read" better.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Regards

Greg

Thank you Steve and Gregory,  these old places to me are historic and tell a lot of stories.  My wife and never touch anything.  My wife may have gotten a better shot of this, as you may see to left there are a couple of drawers hanging out.  If would have used a little wider focal point I could have gotten the cabinets there,  I'll go back.

I like the mood that this picture has. I am a sucker for textures (which abound in this photo.) I think that I would kinda have liked it more if you had panned over to the right a little so that there was a little more room to the right of the door so that there was a little more of the wall next to it and then part of the drawers on left would be gone.
