I like this portrait. A lovely smile and a very beautiful subject. I would however try lighting this will a little fill flash or a soft light from the side. The shadow cast on her are a little distracting and a little light in the eyes would help to bring out that smile.

Hey,

I was limited to available light here and "here" is in the wings of a theater during dress rehearsal, so  I can't use fill light, get in the way, or take much time of the cast.

I imagine this was an 'on stage' shot and 'in the wings'. I wonder if that is the case if a 'fash' would be distracting to those on stage. I don't m ind the shadows, because of this and that is a glorious smile to miss out on. Sometimes you just have to 'grab' the moment! Well done Chuck.

I understand your limitations, but I think the shadows are pretty distracting and interfere with important features of her face.

I had the choice of using this image or not using it. The light was out of my control, so I don't find your comment useful or pertinent.

It's just those shadowy lines that distinguish this picture and seem to play against her toothy smile that gives this picture it's impact. I think a couple of your commenters missed the point; this is not a classical portrait, certainly not under these conditions. It's an opportunity shot that was recognized as such and a picture taken with available light backstage. It should be judged in that genre and not as a carefully calibrated studio-type shot.
