Wonderful capture of this bat. Great detail shown. I see that it is hanging out in a tree. Do they sleep in trees during the daylight hours.  Great Capture.   Best regards.

Thanks Sherry. These fruit bats or flying foxes roost in large colonies in forests during the day. The smell and the noise levels can be exceptional.

At dusk they leave the roost site in search of fruiting trees. In some locations in Australia they can be an endless procession that can take quite some time to pass by. I have seen crocodiles eat them when they swoop to the surface of rivers to get a drink on the wing as they leave the roost site. Sometimes eagles pluck them from trees during the day if they are too close the outer edge of the tree canopy.

This flying fox is actually "walking" upside down to move along a branch to access fruit. You can see the claws of its right foot about to grasp the branch in the top lhs of the image.

Fascinating animals. Unfortunately, this particular species is endangered due to habitat loss, disturbance and being killed by irate fruit farmers.
