Andy,

This is a great story telling photo, with marvelous feeling.

When I look at it and keep track of where my eyes spend their time, I find that I look at the right side for 2 seconds and never look back at it; but spend a lot of time on the child and the cat.  Especially the cat - what is the cat looking at?  - apparently not the photographer.

This kind of analysis suggests to me that the right side of your image is not doing anything for it.  My proposal is to crop the right side out leaving a vertical image of the left.  In fact, I would even consider cropping out some of or even all of the rug.  I'll show you what I mean.  Notice that the long implied diagonal line of the cat's vision now leads the viewer to strongly wonder about the missing person (?) the cat is looking at.

Looking at the cropped image my eyes go from cat to vertical left margin, down to the child, to the shoes, up to the cat...... (my eyes are really engaged at looking!)  I brightened the picture also - just a tad.

Regards,

Jerry

Even though my eyes may spend most of the time in the lower left quarter, I don't think that means the other 3/4 of the frame are useless.  I may not look as intently at the 3/4, but I'm definitely aware it's there, and what it provides is context.  I like to be able to see the full length of the bed, and I like the additional detail of the wall with all of its minor imperfections.  The rug has a pattern that is busier than I would like, and I think something more plain might work better, but I think I'd prefer a rug to a plain floor without a rug.  The cat's staring at something is mildly distracting; imagine if the cat had turned its head toward the girl at that moment.  This is an absolutely wonderful series, and I always look forward to the next idea.
