I'm not sure what you mean by "heavy handed," but I'd guess it has to do with the processing that was applied.  I've never been to Mickey Springs, but this prompted me to watch a 15-minute YouTube video someone made while visiting.  I think I can see steam in the background on the right, but I can't really see the pond.  I don't do much dodging and burning myself, but I wonder if the small stream were made a tad lighter that might help distinguish it and make it stand out more prominently (although, it already is relatively light, so I'm not sure).  Keep in mind I had trouble photographing some areas of Yellowstone, and I think a small area with fewer features would be much more difficult.

Thanks Steve. The Mickey hot spring and basin are just over the top beautiful places, but I have never produced an image of either that I like. I thought I would try to over do this and see it it worked, but it looks like it  could still be cranked up in the contrast area. I don't know. Maybe the message is just enjoy it while I'm there and forget the camera. I'll crank this up a bit more and post it.

I just cranked up things in the spring and other areas. I guess I posted this hoping perhaps others might see something in it that I didn't, but I think I was correct in my original assessment. I just don't think this one is a wall hanger. Maybe next time I'm there I'll get one.
