Along the route between Vangaindrano and Fort Dauphin, Madagascar.

There were grass fires burning all along this desolate dirt road

winding through big sky country, making the air hazy. When we came

upon this tree that had obviously suffered some major trauma (a

cyclone, perhaps?), I had only a split second to raise my camera and

snap this shot as we went speeding by. It has turned out to be one of

my favorites from that trip through backcountry Madagascar.
