Wow this plane certainly looks different Mike. Excellent capture. I will have to take a look online about the history of this plane, has me wanting to know more!

It's a CAC Boomerang (Wikipedia has a detailed entry) that we designed and built in Australia during WW2.  Apparently too slow to be a good interceptor it was however reasonably successful in a ground support role.

 

I think the big rotary engine makes it seem 'fat' and the rounded tail and wing tips were from an older generation of designs.
