I just did not get a repeat of this performance, though I waited everyday for the next fortnight or so.

also interesting, would have liked a darker sky, but well, I've seen a professional photographer who doesn't have the sky blue when in contrejour

A fine presentation of this colorful little bird.

Now, if you are using a non-image stabilized lens, you are welcome to join my hand held club for using any lens, especially longer telephoto types without any support but your hands !

Good job with your 500mm lens with or without IS.

I actually teach techniques to some local photographers for hand holding lens , like 500mm , to 1/60 second with regular success. It is not for everyone,as it does take plenty of practice and patience.

It was a Sigma 150-500 lens, with IS.

It was a handheld shot, from the roof of my apartment block, just managed to get only 3 shots of this, before it flew away. Distance would have been around 200ft, never got this bird anywhere close again.
