The watermark is there to make it a little more difficult for people who steal images and claim them as their own. This has happened to me on a number of occasions (including twice with government agencies).

It takes a lot of time, money and occasionally pain to get my images - I want to make sure if someone intends to pilfer them, that there is no mistake about who the copyright belongs to...

Some people take the notion of "sharing" a bit too literally.
