One of the things I like about these insects is the depth of 'black' in their bodies. When they get moving around they really show off their anatomy. Excellent Macro Grigoriy!

Ahhh, you found a live one ;-).  Excellent macro.  Love how it's feeling with it's antenna while tasting at the same time... Mike

I've been shooting live insects the past few years, and made it a special quest to shoot one of these this year.  I've got a few now, but none with such good depth of field yet.  From a distance they seem more blue - I was surprised to see how little blue there is except for the iridescence on the wings.  I've also shot some smaller black wasps that are even less blue, and I realized recently that the smaller ones always seem to have their wings extended at an angle when they're not flying, while these larger ones and some others seem to stack their wings flat on their backs when they're not flying. I'm wondering if there is a taxonomic significance to that like butterflies vs. moths and dragonflies vs. damselflies.  Any entomologists out there?

Regards, Tom

Thanks to everyone for comments and ratings.

Tom, those wasps is completely black, and this large size I seen only this season, never before. About blue wings. Wings reflect the sky. If you take images using circular polarizing filter,  then wings become completely black, colorless.
