Good composition and very nice light Alf,The clouds pointing behind the boat is nice as well, the boat looks more abandoned than resting to me,nice work,my regards

There is a variety of old abandoned boats at Banks Road, but I've

never captured a single one that I was happy about. I was playing

around with this shot when my wife looked over my shoulder at the

PC monitor and said " I like that one" ......Now you must understand

that my wife never shows the slightest bit of interest in landscape

photo's unless it has an animal of some kind in it. So I was intrigued

by her interest in this one. Your thoughts and comments are always

appreciated.

The very close perspective of the boat provides a very nice drama to the scene and the dramatic clouds completes the image. Seems that the boat is trapped with no visible water around which to maneuvered but guess it's just resting as the title suggests.

Very appealing landscape, Alf. Regards!

Your wife's got a good eye Alf! This is superbly composed, with loads of interest. Excellent image guy!

All the best,

With one possible exception, your wife has excellent taste ;-) .  Old boats have a nostalgic charm that's very difficult to resist and this one certainly does as well.  The lighting has a very pleasant softness and you've managed the wide angle very well...  Excellent work...  Mike

She is right!!! Love the POV and how the boat is 'right in your face', makes it very 'dynamic'. The old peeling paint and colours on the boat add to the image. Foreground detail is beautiful. Another one that should be framed Alf!!!

I like it, too. The boat is interesting and the background works well, which isn't always easy to arrange.

The way you have captured all the textures and details of this old boat gives it so much character! really like the framing of the sky to add additional interest. Really well seen and captured. Best wishes. Sarah.

There is always something nostalgic with beached (or ''mudded'') boats.  This one is superbly well composed. I love the character of the wood, and the leading lines. Nice sky too. Overall a well constructed image - michel

Alf, I love the lens and perspective you have chosen here. Wonderful lines in this that help carry the viewer through the image. From the rope bottom left to the metal pipe carrying the eye to the upper center sky. The exposure is wonderful, nice muted colors and overall a pleasing looking scene. It has a nice wide angle feel to it and I love that. Great work as usual Alf.

Hello Alf,

Your wife helped pick a beauty here.  Alot to like as always starting with the darker ligting which suits the subject.  But then the lighter top right leaves me with a happier feeling as I am led out of the image (if that makes any sense).  Excellent detail as usual.  Love the lines in the clouds.  Did the lens have anything to do with the effect of the clouds ?  In any case, it is another great shot IMO.

Cheers,

Jerry

Many thanks for stopping by and for your kind comments. You are quite right the boat is abandoned, but looed like it was having an afternoon snooze to me, hence the name. This is a great location for these old abandoned boats, but capturing the is tricky, I've been down here about 4 times perviously and this is the first image that I've maked as  a keeper.......though I think there is a couple of others from the same session.

The wide angle lens helped with the perspective, and I think the colours were the result of the late evening light. some times it just all comes together.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

Many thanks for your interest and thoughtful feedback, much appreciated!

The location is an area of mud flats and channels that only fill up at high tide, this gives the impression that the boats (many of which are actually abandoned) are marooned on dry land.  This one did appear to be resting though : - ) I'm very pleased you liked it Lester.

"One possble exception" ? ..........No I cant possibly imagine what or who that could be : - )

I agree about the charm of old boats they seem to posses an almost magnetic attraction. But despite this, I have found capturing them to well, to be very elusive. This is my 5th visit to this location, and my first where I can honestly say I have come away with a few keepers. The 14 - 24 mm is an awesome wide angle.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

Alf

Shhh I can't let her read this now, I'll never hear the last of it, I'll be hearing " I told you so" for the next month! : - )

Wide angle can produce a lot of distortion, particularly when used close up, but I managed to keep the camera level and that helps, and the lens iitself does a good job.

Many Thanks for your thoughtful consideration and positive feedback Gail, much appreciated!

You have great insight, the background was the most difficult element to arrange. Not least because there was another boat behind this one that I needed to keep hidden in order to maintain seperation.

Many Thanks & Best Regards

SARAH

I owe a lot to the high qaulity of the lens, it produces good results even at close range. The sky was an added bonus and the colours overall the product of the late evening light.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

Thank you so much for your well considered thoughts and comments.

I agree the element of nostalgia always comes to the fore when photographing old vessels. But I have found that getting the composition right in the past has been difficult to achieve, hopefully I'm past that hurdle now.

The 14 - 24 mm is a brilliant lens. I don't use it as often as I thought I would, but when its needed it really does perform well. I have also processed this in sepia tint version, to take advantge of the nostalgic element, but on balance I like the colour version better. Sincere thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback Joe, very much appreciated!

She has her uses now and again Jerry : - )

I think that the wide angle lens does accentuate the dynamics of the clouds to some degree, though not a huge amount here because I kept it level in order to avoid distortion of the boat.  I do know what you mean about the dark to light gradation. I'm very pleased you liked it Jerry.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

Everything has been said. I like the composition and the vivid sky. The old boat has probably an interesting story to tell.

Now this is magical, an excellent shot here Alf, a story telling picture. It's so vivid and real that I feel like it would come alive any minute...very, very beautiful that makes you forget the slight distortion.  take care my friend!  Cheers!

Hello Alf, I love the wide angle approach, but what I like most about this when viewing large was the detail in the boat and the fact that its sitting in this mud. You've really captured the surroundings very well, especially the mud!! When viewing larger I noticed there were a couple spots in the sky which seemed a little unnatural that I overlooked in normal view. Regardless this is a fine image and one I like a lot, especially the mud. Take care my friend.

Best,

Holger

Alf, this is an EXCELLENT image, great perspective, wonderful detail and true to life colour. I also like the slight movement in the clouds.
