Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)

The old dutch name for the European Goldfinch is (literally translated)

"Thistle Finch", therefore the finch perched on top of a thistle gives an extra

"background". Or that was what I thought. This photo is quite cropped

already, I wouldn't want to crop it even further...

Wondering what your comments would be!

I think the DOF is well done and I like the lighting and the colours a lot. I think the grass adds to the picture so wouldn't want to crop that out - it makes it look more natural, like something you could see if you'd go out, instead of a very zoomed-in portrait of the bird. I like the over all composition and the use of just a few basic colors.  While I understand that your image is already quite cropped, a further crop to tighten up the subject and decrease the amount of "dead" space would really help.

I like this a lot Irene.  Good job thinking unconventionally....this is a great photo of a bird and of the environment in which it lives.  I don't think you need to crop this any further.   Good color and nice light too.  The background is sufficiently out of focus to not distract from the main subject.  Very well done!
