This photo, 'Contrasts', was taken at Kyiv, Ukraine's main train

station, somewhere toward the front, but hidden from view from the

front. I hope you enjoy the 'contrasts' depicted'. Your ratings,

critiques and observations are invited and most welcome. If you rate

harshly, very critically or with to make a remark, please submit a

helpful and constructive comment; please share your photographic

knowledge to help improve my photography. Thanks! Enjoy! (And

double click, please, to unveil the 'large' view, to help better

understand this photo in which distant detail is important). john

With modern post processing software, I could have brightened the shadow area considerably, but felt that would have destroyed the intent of the photo and destroyed one of the contrasts - - the somberness of the shadow area and distorted the message.

I'm glad it meets your approval.

I used lasso around the dark and brightned a bit without changing the whites -as a possibility. When I post it here it will appear on photonet darker than my original.

Your photo suggestions particularly about tonalities are most welcome here.

When you are 'on topic' and within your field of expertise and experience, there may be none more skillful on Photo.net or with a better eye for such things.

It is good to see your post, even if it didn't work as you hoped; all efforts at improvement are appreciated and most welcome.

Thank you for your efforts for this little recognized photo, which I happen to like for its subtlety, even quirky composition, which 'works' for me but is clearly not mainstream.

But then I've seldom cared about such things.

I march to my own drummer on such things and always have.  I don't need to follow any 'do this' and 'don't do that' rule book herd; I do what feels good to my photo soul and that's my only limitation. It may lead to what in retrospect feels like mistakes, but that's the price of experimenting and learning.

Best wishes and thanks.

P.S. I marked both contributions 'helpful'.

I've finally revealed that cameras and lenses were stolen.

I have a replacement campaign underway through a funding site.

Here is a link.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/189642

All visitors and members here and friends too are encouraged to go there, whether or not they wish to donate.

The funding site will promote the donation campaign more, possibly resulting in my equipmenmt being replaced easier and quickly if more people -- donors or just visitors -- show up.  The site managers feel it shows 'interest' and they reward that interest with more promotion for my quest.

You've been able to look at my photos for eight years for no cost, how about clicking the link and looking at the site even briefly?

There's also a gallery of 56 of my all time best color and black and white photos -- including some you probably missed.  Have a look if you're not up to searching through the almost 2,000 photos I've posted here.

Send your friends and your friends' friends there too. Post it on Facebook, and, if you're still there, on My Space, and all other social networking sites as well.

Tell your blog friends as well; they purloin my photos for their sites, why not let them help me get my equipment back?

You don't have to donate to help make my campaign make waves that will draw in attention which in turn helps attract potential donors and cause the site to give efforts to promote my replacement campaign.

Also, go there, to learn the inside scoop on what Henri Cartier-Bresson told me personally in 1969 that changed the course of my life, at his San Francisco museum photo exhibition where a coworker and friend of his sent me to meet him.   All recalled recently from some cobwebby place in my memory.

(HCB took his own advice and promptly gave up photography for good about then, something I didn't learn for decades.).

So, click the link, visit the site, and on the bio page there, read all about it.

Also, learn one more way a guy can be separated from his beloved cameras.

It's great if you want me to admit appearing foolish.  But you got to go there to find out how.
