Lily Pads

Hi Len, Nice catch on this one. I really like shots like this. The puddle of water in the centre enhances the shot.

Looking for ideas on how I could have made this shot more interesting

or appealing. Any takers?

Its a good shot. I think the negative space is killing the focal points. I would say zooming in or more objects would make it better.

The unusual nature of this image and the beautiful mauves knock me out. The composition is interesting and I think it should be minimal but might have benefitted from some little dab of light or bright color, or from a third lily pad to complete a triad.

Kamran, I tried zooming in for another composition but, to my eye at the time, including the second, submerged pad provided a counterbalance to the single large one. Guess I should follow my own advice & 'work' my subject a little more, taking many compositions instead of just one.

 

Howard, I guess the mauve colours were one of the factors that caught my eye as most other lily pads I photographed that day (see my 2003 folder) were green. There were only the two pads in the immediate vicinity so I did the best I could with them but your point is well taken.

a simple view of lily pads is refreshingly original in that it does not show the showy flower but the contact of water in the puddle on the pad, and the detail shown beneath the water's surface, the plants growing beneath. Original, simple, excellent. Makes me ashamed to think how many shots I have tried like this handheld with mediocre results. Shows your patience and good eye to see and capture this.
