Meditations

Single exposure, f10, ISO 100A wonderful pre-dawn sunrise above the Pemigewasset Wilderness in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Loved the abstract nature of this one, I could see forever on this morning.

A perfect predawn scene from atop Garfield Ridge in NH's White

Mountains with views into Maine. On this morning I could see

forever it seemed. SIngle exposure, f10, ISO 100. Comments,

suggestions welcome.

Harry - I would give an eye-tooth to be confronted with a scene likes this and capture it as well as you. While mountainous gradations are not new in the photo community this is what appeals to me the most. If you want to maintain the 4x6 format ratio then you have little choice but to leave this image in its current form.

What it comes down to is a personal preference; Pick the things I really like and reduce or eliminate those which bring me  less pleasure.

The dark mountain the foreground occupies a fair amount of space and does not do very much for me. If I was going to buy this image I would perform a crop which leaves it in a panoramic format. I would crop about half the sky and an equivalent at the bottom - almost to the top of the top of the foreground mountain at the extreme left side.

I think that the resulting panoramic format creates problems for printing and general sales but I am no expert in this area.

Remember this is just an opinion based on personal likes. I hope others will weigh in.

Tony - I have played around with crops of the image.  I'll include the original for comparison.  Thanks for your thought.  I agree the dark hulk may occupy a bit too much of the scene.  Thanks!

A perfect Zen moment!  The crop is well done but you can't go wrong with either view.  Again, just perfect... Thanks for sharing... Mike

A classic scene perfectly rendered, Harry.

The next time you're up on this ridge for a perfect sunset ;-), I'd set up a few hundred yards to the left and try to get some more space between the foreground mountain and the first ridge beyond so that there's a bit more separation between the two.  I realize that may be impossible however or other less than ideal congruences may occur.

Dave - Due to the direction of the ridge I wa on, moving down the ridge would have placed me facing the closest mountain (hill)! and loosing the color and layered mountains beyond.  It is a little unfortunate that they lined up as they did, but not could be done about it without disturbing the rest of the image.  This was my compromise.  Thanks for your thoughts.

I like your submitted attachment.

Here is my crop for your perusal. But as I said, you can't go wrong with your original posting.

It is difficult to describe 'balance' in a composition but by reducing the foreground mountain, I am able to better focus on the delightful gradations peaking (pun intended)  with that wonderful sky.

Mine completely changes the personality of the image and it is simply food for thought.

Harry,  Wow, you were duly rewarding for getting up early.  Nature showed off at its best for you.  Fabulous capture.  I think its grrrreat just as it is.  Of the crops in the discussion, I like your first one, but I favor the original.  It's easy to fuss around with an image as excellent as this one.  I say go with your eye.  It's 20-20 in this image.  Larry

Such a lovely capture Harry. I have been in the mountains, and seen a few morning foggy images, but nothing like this. The title is perfect an almost seems 'unreal' that the landscape could appear like this but I know it to be so. ENCHANTING!! Sincere regards, Gail
