Jack McRitchie 150 Posted June 9, 2012 For some reason this made me think of the new age, modernistic photography of the 1930's that celebrated the industrial and the mechanical. But the underlying psycholgy of the period always seemed somehow hollow as if the human being were not enough, that somehow we would need brilliantly designed machines to win the day. Today that belief in the superiority of the machine has largely given way to a sense of detachment and perhaps that's what I sense in this photograph, a comment on the triumph of style over substance. The dark area seems almost like a cancer which eats at the studied indifference of the smoker. By the way, this is not a critique of the picture which I think is very strong and provocative but more a reflection on the social psycholgy it seems to bring into focus for me. Link to comment

3m 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Powerful.... A great, atypical composition. Excellent work, Gunnar!( PS: strange, I had similar connotation to Jack re: cancer & the black tubular shape...) Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted June 21, 2012 A strong and well balanced graphic presentation. The crispness of the cup and its shadow juxtapose nicely with the softness of the print of the smoker. Link to comment
