My garage "studio" again. Background is some piles of boxes and a trash barrel. Since I don't know what I'm doing with my scanner and couldn't get the color right, it's scanned to B&W.

William - Have mercy on my cheap scans. :) In the original print, the eyes are in fact tack sharp, but I shot with the lens basically wide open for bare minimum DOF. See the tech details about the background.

sorry, man, no foul intended....I have conversations with my scanner as well, but what really has me befuddled is the compression that photo.net throws in at the upload of a photo, I end up over sharpening to compensate and have realized that I am spending more time honing internet small file size uploading skills than 5megapixel digital image prints,,,,,it is all so confusing.

it is a great shot.

spending more time honing internet small file size uploading skills...

I looked at hundreds of photos here wondering "where did they find this many people who can't focus correctly" before I realized that there must be some trick behind the file processing that many people - especially me - haven't discovered. :)

In this case, the extremely narrow DOF was to a large degree intentional, partly to smudge the truly horrific background, partly to get a fast enough shutter speed to account for my shaky hands, and also because I've always been fond of this style. There was once a time when it was considered poor technique to have ears in focus. At least in that sense I got this one right. :)

Great eyes, but the rest of the face looks a bit soft. Were you shooting wide opened? I think just a little more DOF to sharpen the nose and hair would help.

I love how you caught the eyes, and then the softness of the rest of the photo. Contrast and Tone are very acceptable for this portrait. A Gallery quality photo
