A dedicated activist...Philadelphia, 1968
ImageDescription: Longtime antiwar and civil rights activist Wallace Nelson fasts outside the Philadelphia headquarters of the Acme supermarket chain in 1968 urging support of the California grape boycott called by the United Farm Workers. Nelson, who served more than three years in federal prison as a conscientious objector in World War II and took part in the first Southern freedom ride in 1947, fasted 21 days outside the Acme offices. A dedicated social activist and a good friend, Nelson passed away in 2002 at the age of 93. ;
