Red Dawn

ronnie gaubert

Image was taken about an hour before sunrise. The camera recorded light and colors that were barely visible to the naked eye. This was a western view and I assume these were high clouds that were capturing the sun even though it was below the horizon. This was a 30 second exposure @ f/8, ISO-200. Image taken at Lake Martin near Lafayette, Louisiana.

I arrived early to shoot a sunrise. But I noticed a red glow in the

Western horizon. The sun was still below the Eastern horizon and it

was very dark at the time. It was really too dark to do any accurate

metering so I just set the camera to its maximum exposure of 30

seconds. The camera's white balance was set to Direct Sunlight. I

also stacked 4 filters on the lens; Skylight 1a, 0.6 Grad. ND,

Circular Polarizer and 81b. This image is out of the camera except

to remove some noise because of the long exposure on my D100.

Comments welcomed and appreciated, thanks.

This is a beautiful shot with a mood that I can't put my finger on the right adjective for. I usually don't go for sillohettes but this one really turns me on. The cloud pattern and the reflection give it so much depth. By any chance did you take the same shot without the filters? I would love to see the difference.

Chris, I did not take any with the filters off. I really don't think they had an effect on the image. I had placed them on the camera with the anticipation of shooting a sunrise. After shooting maybe 4 shoots of the western skies I returned back to my truck. The mosquitoes were so bad I never shot the sunrise.

This is a real sweet shot Ronnie,to me one of your best in the portfolio.I say this because I know what it means to get out of bed at 4am just to catch THE MAGNIFICENT LIGHT.

Solid composition,a little dark in the lower right corner but just a nit pick.I would put this in my portfolio anyday!

By the way Ronnie, your polarizer acted as an ND filter I am assuming,no polarization.I would also expect that your warm oranges were influenced by the 81B.

Great mood, lighting, and balance of the trees in the foreground.

I can't decide if I like the blue clouds at the top- they give a nice color contrast but distract from the mood a little- I'd love to see w/ the blue desaturated,

Great effort and result.

The dawn loom on the Gulf clouds is eye-catching. But the silhouette of the hanging moss and the mirror reflection of the loom on the lake seal the deal. Magnificent.

An unusual & nicely moody silhouette/sky shot to be sure Ronnie. I'm very surprised to hear this was in the opposite direction to the rising sun. You might care to try a version with that deep blue sky lightened a bit to better preserve the tree outline in the top left.

A wonderful shot. Very interesting colors. Particularly like what is going on in the upper sky zone.

Great result. I am especially impresssed that with current "technology" you can still wing it with a guessed exposure. Proves that photography really hasn't changed that much. An inspiration for those of us who tend to get caught up in technology.

Love the shot, the colors really set the mood.

And thanks for giving us some of the details on your camera settings for this picture. I wish other people would let us know how they set things up or how they used photoshop.

What do you think the polarizer accomplished in this shot (besides the comment about ND filter)? If the light was so low, how did you rotate it to obtain the desired effect? Great colors, especially the deep-deep blues in the sky.

I had mounted those filters on the lens in anticipation of getting a few sunrise shots. But when the oportunity came to get this shot I just didn't take the time to remove the filters. I really think the only filters that had any effect were the 81b and the graduated ND .6, the 1a and polarizer really did nothing.
