Santan is the oldest of the male orang-utans at Melbourne zoo and

father of Dewi (the latest addition to the family unit).

In this shot he was resting while Dewi was playing close by and making

small attempts to gain his interest.

Thanks for your thoughts

This is truly an amazing picture. So my question is, how did you do it? Especially with regards to the lighting. It looks like it was taken in a studio, but I assume it wasn't.

Thanks everyone for your comments on this. Timothy, in answer to your question, this image was taken at the Royal Melbourne zoo from one of the viewing platforms where orang-utans often sit and play. They are separated from visitors by a piece of glass and under favourable light conditions (overcast days) present wonderful photo opportunities. After taking the image I work on it in photoshop whereby I reduced saturation lowered exposure and then through the use of layers enhanced aspects of the scene to highlight this magnificent creature's features and character. Its a style of photo editing that I try to apply to all my zoo photos. Hope that helps

I love this picture, he looks like he's worn out from playing all day...great shot and awesome color and clarity.

Your careful editing procedure certainly pays off and in turn gives us much viewing pleasure. Lovely image Art. Sure makes me wonder what they think when you see them asleep or even as they daydream.

thankyou for sharing your 'passion' with us all, Gail
