On Monday I decided to go out and see what I could find in the

Garden to 'practice on', then later go for a drive around town to see

what flowers were blooming. My Peonies are budding, and there was

a flurry of Wasps all around the plants. The only other insect I saw

besides perhaps 2 ants was this 'fly'. At least it sure looked like a fly.

In another capture I have the image of this 'black tube' like thing

coming from it's mouth. I was 'handholding' for this shot. If I am

sitting down I don't do too badly, but it's when I have to stand that I

find it very difficult, especially if the wind if blowing, which is almost is

everyday where I live. I know I can do better with this lens, but I was

surprised I captured as much as I did. If anyone knows the name of

this 'fly' I'd sure love to hear from you. (warm regards, and thankyou

in advance for any visits, Gail)

Earlier on in the day I had set my Camera Settings back to Factory Default. I wanted to rework the settings from scratch. My only mistake was 'not' so set the ISO at that time also. I don't know why I forgot it. Unfortunately it was much later that I realized that the ISO was set to AUTO, 3200 is far too high. I did reset the ISO but that was much later.

I don't know why you should set the ISO so high . Personally I never alter it from 100 and with a macro lens I set the shutter  speed to one  I can hand hold , and let the Aperture take care of it's self . That is if I'm not using flash or manual . I think with a lower speed and consequently a smaller aperture the increased DOF would have given you a first class shot . As for the Fly , to me a Fly is a Fly , others may know different ! Bill

ISO you used is to high in my opinion for this shot, but result is good as I see,I use myself most of time 100 or 200,regarding the aperture, you can choose what you want to have a depth of field smaller or bigger, what I like to this kind of macro images are details that can't be seen other than this and some time this are spectacular,my best regards Gail.

An excellent macro, especially hand held.  A fly is a fly is a fly and I have to admit that I treat most the way Garfield treats spiders ;-)... Mike

I had hoped people would see the note I entered before the rest of the critiques started.

I had RESET my camera settings backto FACTORY DEFAULT earlier in the day. I set everything up EXCEPT THE ISO - simply just FORGOT. It was not until much later that I checked the ISO and saw that it was at 3200!!! I never have it set over 100, except if I had it on 'Program' setting for I photo I probably took a long time ago, and did not quite understand how ISO affects your photos. Consequently ALL my photos that afternoon had a TON of COLOUR noise in them, I was so disappointed that I had MADE THAT MISTAKE. When I discovered my 'oversight' I immediatedly corrected it, but was too late. I thought I would try posting this one anyways. Thanks for your visit Bill - appreciate your input.

Warmest regards, Gail

Many thanks for your visit and kind words of critique. I think flys are actually really ugle, but the insect world does fascinate me. And of course they are great to practice on for MACRO.

Yep they are pretty UGLY and I've read more dangerous to a human being than a 'tiger'. Mainly because of the bacteria and disease they spread. If one gets in my HOUSE, or near my DINNER, 'splat' - I'm afraid I have no mercy when it comes to them 'pucking on any of my 'stuff' while they continue to consume whatever they are consuming.' I remember the movie 'THE FLY' with Jeff Goldblum that came out many years ago. I made the mistake of watching it whiile I had the stomach flue :-( just made me feel sicker!!! Many thanks for your visit.

Well you are partly right there 'Wizard' - experimenting a lot with F2/8. Many thanks for your visit and kind critique. I do appreciate your visits Pierre.

If you look at the explanation above, you will see that the ISO was set to 3200 in error....just forgot to reset it along with my other settings after I had set the camera back to FACTORY DEFAULTS. I was so angry with myself. Tons of noise in my pics that day. Thanks for your Positive input though Radu. I do appreciate hearing from you.

I think the macro looks very good and without you saying nobody would have noticed it. I really appreciate your introduction! It makes me feel better - it happened to me too! It is frustrating, but some interesting results might happen. I try to take it with humour: sometimes we have to work hard to get an interesting shot and here we go, it came from a mistake. Fun! Your fly is beautiful - the colours are natural, sharp with good dof. First time when I worked with macro lens on some hairy moth I felt sick. And switched to flowers. :) Warm regards, Tamara

Gail,

This is an excellent macro, with great detail.  To bad about the high ISO, but this gives you an opportunity to go practice again.  I have just started shooting macro, and hope to go practice later this morning when the butterfly's are out.  Best Regards, bb

I saw the image and didnt even saw the high ISO, I dont know which software you used but ligthroom does an excellent job in decreasing the noise. I like the image, it is a good macro. Well Done,

Ben

Hi Gail, what I really like about this image is YOUR ability to venture out (as in out of your usual photography genre/style) and produce a wonderful image like this. Although the ISO setting may be high,  I don't think it has adversely effected the end result to the degree such an ISO setting could. The fact the image is captured with good available light has afforded you some leeway in 'hiding' most of the noise. As you have indicated, with practice comes knowledge of greater execution, so I look forward to seeing more.

The picture is pretty good considering the ISO and the conditions but in the end, the thing I'll take from this picture is the importance of checking one's settings before one start shooting. I've done the same thing far too many times myself. Hopefully, a lesson learned as well as a lesson taught.

Nothing like taking images 'we will remember & learn from'. Sounds like a plan, for me at least! LOL! thanks for dropping by Jack!
