This spoonbill was chasing the carp around the pond with its bill - every

time it got within range it would try to close its bill on the fish’s tail. It

was never really trying seriously to catch them but seemed to be

content to just 'feel them up a bit'. The carp for their part didn't seem to

like it but didn't do much to get clear either and kept coming back.

Cheers,

Mike

Great image Mike. Especially good detail in the face and eye. I  have seen these birds on TV the odd time but bills always closed. Perhaps it's endeavours were more like a 'game' to it. We have Carp at some of the attractions here in Canada, and they let you feed them. There are usually so many Carp in the ponds that it is almost 'creepy'. They jump right out of the water onto the shore just to grab some food. I really dont know why they encourage it. There are so many fish, they are literally on top of each other. I haven't been to our Toronto Zoo for many years, I really should go back and visit some time.

Once again, excellent capture and story. Warm regards, Gail

Thanks Gail and Rudd,

Yes I think it was just playing with them; it only sought of 'mouthed' them gently - almost like playing tag.

All the best,

Mike
