Solitary trees have long been a favorite subject of mine, and here the presence of other trees obscured by fog seems to enhance the solitary nature of this particular tree (like the "loneliness in a crowd" concept applied to people).  That's why I composed it like this and why I made the photograph in the first place.  Comments and suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Stephen, You accomplished your goals quite admirably here.

The solitude of this tree has been perfectly captured here and the thick fog and icy branches make not only for nice compositional elements but also create some great tonality in this b&w photograph. Sometimes I find fog actually ruins an image by reducing the total contrast and obscuring detail but in this instance, and for this goal, it works perfectly.

A very nice scene Stephen.

The thumbprint really does this no justice at all, and my first impressions were that it was a very plain and uninspiring photograph. How wrong can you be! Once I clicked on it and then viewed it larger it became apparent why you felt compelled to take the shot. The fine filigree frosted branches and stark winter limbs are almost tangible against the ghostly spectres in the background. The central composition becomes less conspicuous when ones eye is taken to studying detail rather than general shape. There is a good margin around the solitary foreground tree that allows the image to breath, and the varying visibility of the background trees allows for some semblence of depth. This is one of them photo's that I always think would look good as a set of four seasonal images depicting each one in all thier glory. I suppose the difficult part is findng the exact same spot from which to take the shot.

Sincere Compliments

Alf

Hi Stephen,

Solitary tree is also one of my favorite photography subjects. I like the composition as it is simple, effective and profound. The fog enhances the solitary feeling and the trees in the background add depth to the photo. Also, I think applying a back boarder is very effective as it helps viewers to be connected with the photo.

Thanks

Bobby

Lovely image and perfect contrast against the soft background. I do like these skeletal looking winter trees.

Best wishes, Dave.

I love the contrast between the delicately frosted tree branches and the softness of the trees obscured by mist. The composition is also great as you achieve your goal of isolating the tree while balancing the image with the trees to the left and right at varying distances (and degrees of obscurity). What a wonderful capture of a mood and moment!

Thanks,

Brian

Richard, Ross, and Michael, thanks for your comments.  I lived in Walla Walla, WA, for about 3 years, and I consider this to be among my personal favorites that I came away with from that area.
