 Yes I guess there are good zoos and bad zoos.  Most of the large government owned zoos inAustraliaare pretty well funded and really try to provide large and enriching environments.  Taronga is has done a great deal over the years to renovate and create really good facilities for the animals.  The Indian elephants have great enclosure and you can see the love and respect the keepers have for them.  It must be working as they have had three calves born in a very short time.

Yes they are so cute when they are little.  I have often thought that if they came in miniature versions, say the size of St Bernard, then I would love an elephant as pet :)
