In the Museum of Delphi one of the most characteristic works of the 5th

c. B.C. is the statue of the Charioteer. The Charioteer and some more

pieces belong to a big composition (Chariot, horses and other figures),

that was dedicated to Apollo by Polyzalos, tyrant of Gela in Sicily, who

won with his quadriga at the Pythian Games in 478 B.C.

The Charioteer is one of the most famous and most important preserved

original bronze statues of ancient Greece. The young man, of a height of

1.80m., is the winner of the chariot-race. He is represented at the

moment that he is applauded by the crowd. It is an excellent work of art,

characteristic of the so-called ''severe style'' (480-450 B.C.). The sculptor

is not known with certainty, but Pythagoras of Samos or the Athenian

master Critios are considered as probable.

The rendering of the details of the face, with the eyes inlaid with stone

and glass and the expression of a restrained and severe pride, are really

supreme. A little known fact is that his torso is dis-analogous to his

body but if you imagine him in his chariot what would have been visible of

his body would have been aesthetically more pleasing.

The mountain range and sunset is from Delphi, what the Charioteer could

have seen the night of his victory.

Thank you.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!...  The bronze Charioteer is one of the most memorable and impressive man-made artifacts from Greek antiquity (for me).  His eyes, when viewed in person are riveting, fully reflecting life and personality... actually, quite haunting.  Your choice to include the colorful sunset is appropriate for the beautiful sunsets often seen across the Mediterranean Sea and the inclusion of the ghostly hands is inspirational.  When standing among the artifacts and ruins of Ancient Greece there is a presence felt of all the people who once called this beautiful land, home....  Again, thank you for the dedication... Mike
