During the tourist season cruise ships fill the harbour & the streets

are crowded with tourists when the ships leave you could shoot a

cannon down the streets without hitting a soul.

Good Morning Ross, Well composed and balanced shot. The sky, land and water sharing equal parts seems to make it work. I think the ships pointed inward towards harbor lead the viewer there as well. Nice work.

I really like the contrast between the rugged terrain of nature against the clean lines of the man made ships. The larger view gives an idea of how huge the ships are which in turn are dwarfed by the mountains. Great shot Ross!

Best Regards

I'm one of the few who live here year round, and I gotta say that I am NOT looking forward to seeing these monsters return in another month.  How I wish more could see this magical area without the chaos and pollution that these ships bring.  That being said...

It's a beautifully composed image of my home town.  I just wish you could photoshop out the ships :-)

Hi Mark-Thanks for your comments & I fully agree with your view of large cruise ships., the thought of mingling with a thousand people give me the willies.Have visited

Skagway three times since retiring in 91. Especially enjoyed our trip up the Inside Pasage in a car ferry to Skagway, lots of wonderfull photo opportunities.Have often thought this would be a great trip in the winter time.

Also enjoyed, as an old railroader, the steam locomotive narrow gauge railroad from Skagway to Bennett Lake , also lots pf photo opportunities, since passengers are allowed to be outside of the coach on the platform between cars

For years we had planned on backpacking the Chilkoot Trail, finally on 1997 we completed the trail ending in Bennett Lake. We met a lot of hikers from different countries who also wanted to follow in the footsteps of the gold seeker in the 1871 Klondike gold rush

In closing,we have really enjoyed our visits to Skagway. Regards-Ross

Ross,

I'm so glad you've had a chance to visit this area and especially hike the Chilkoot.  The Ferry ride up here is spectacular... I have done it a number of times from Bellingham (and have camped out on the deck).  The Inside Passage is one of the scenic marvels of the world, and I just hope we don't destroy it as we have done everyplace else (there are forces at work as I write).

Next time you're up here, please look me up... drop me an e-mail and I'd be happy to meet you and show you around... or you could show me around :-)

Thanks for documenting this beautiful area in your photos.

Mike

My parents did a Cruise to Alaska and Dad came away with some very impressive photos. It truly sounds like a location 'like no other'.

It is unfortunate that in order for so many to see this 'paradise' they must travel by this means. I know so many people who rave about their trips to Alaska, enriched by the experience. I can understand Mark's feelings re the 'ships'.

A difficult situation; there are probably so many who rely on the money brought in by Tourism. If it was to disappear, I am sure it would be missed. It is almost one of those 'damned if you do, and damned if you don't' scenerios. My thoughts only, as I have never been there, nor experienced the 'love for such a place, and it being my home'.

Lovely capture Ross.

Warmest regards, Gail
