This vulture soared low overhead and circled around which made it difficult

to track with the 100-400. Lighting and detail shown was best on this shot,

one of a dozen or so. This was cropped a bit and the wing feathers at the

bottom of the frame did not get captured in the full version. Comments,

questions, ratings and critiques are encouraged.

Jim,

Beautiful shot.  Amazing underneath lighting on this bird.  Wonderful detail on the feathers and head.  I've struggled with head detail in particular on this bird.  Interesting that his feathers are fairly beat up.  Must be an older one.

You have done well with this capture. I appreciate the level of difficulty.

I have had little success with soaring raptors.... but continue to try when the opportunity presents.

Good underbody lighting and detail........... well done

This is very well done.  These guys always look so slow and lazy, but when tracking them they're amazingly fast and elusive.  Good shot...  Mike

Thanks for your comments.  You've made me aware that due to the banking of the bird as it turned and the afternoon sun, the lighting underneath this turkey vulture is good.

Excellent shot.  I see you used the Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS. It must have been hand held. I only get good shots when using my tripod which isn't the best way to capture birds in flight. I'm impressed.

Best wishes,

Linda

OK, now that I've seen your offering I'm going to take mine down.  :-)  Just kidding.  Although I'll yield that yours is the superior image mine is the best one I've taken to date.  You've definitely given me (and likely others too) something to shoot for.  Most impressive.  Who said these birds are ugly?  This one's a beauty.  Some truth to the saying that for birding you can't have too long a lens.  Best, LM.
