Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Jim!  That is so true.  A little darker and the foreground color would have disappeared--and it would have become totally two-dimensional (which it is, of course) with no sense of three dimensions.

I think increasing the saturation would have made that more obvious, but then the brightness of the colors would have made one less likely to see what you saw.  Ah, photography does not have to be garish in its colors and their effects. It can be subtle as well.
