ldavidson 4 Posted March 6, 2012 I have never seen this bird before, if you can identify it I would be interested in knowing. I shot this on Kauaii, Hawaii. Radu, Tony, I followed your advice re: sharpening and Bicubic Sharpener when saving for PN. Thanks again. What do you think? Link to comment
steveshinn 0 Posted March 6, 2012 It's a male, White-rumped Shama. The Hui Manu Society (a bunch of bored locals) imported them from Malaysia in the 1930s along with a heap of others to spruce up their birding opportunities. Of course some of their imports carried diseases so that almost all of Kauai's forest birds can now only be found at higher elevations. Were you at the Chocolate Farm too? Link to comment
ldavidson 4 Posted March 6, 2012 Ruud, thanks for stopping by. Steve, thank you, that is good to know. He was very tame, I walked right up to him and he just sat and posed for me. I bought a flower identification book, but barely had time to go through that.Kauai had a lot of unusual and beautiful birds that I had never seen before, the flora and fauna was also so interesting. Of course chickens over ran the entire island, even at the highest elevation. There was an abundance of little white Egret, and Red-crested Cardinal, Myna, also not native. I recognized the Myna from my childhood when they were popular pets. We went to the coffee plantation but not the Chocolate Farm. I didn't see that in any of our travel info. Kauai is definitely a photographer's paradise. On the last day my auto focus stopped working. I had to resort to manual focusing. I was so disappointed in the images from that day. I hope we will go back again. Again thanks for the identification.Best wishes,Linda Link to comment
steveshinn 0 Posted March 7, 2012 I had to ask because we were there from Feb 22-29 and there was a similar, very cooperative WwS there. It would have been nutty if we crossed paths and didn't know it. We went to the Coffee plantation but it was the rainy day so no tour, just java.I got off a few shots while I was on the Island, have a peek when you get time.Aloha! Link to comment
ldavidson 4 Posted March 7, 2012 We were there from the 10th to the 20th of February, so we just missed you. We stayed in Poipu Beach at Koloa Landing. Now I am curious, where did you stay?I looked at your photos, I made one quick comment. It looks like we took some of the same shots from identical locations. I will be back later on when I have more time. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted March 7, 2012 This is a very beautiful bird composition, and thanks both ,you and Steve, for the information! I like the triangled 'frame"of the branches, the male colors and the details of its long tail!(seducing the femals....;-)) the shallow green BG is helping to enhance its beauty.I understand you renjoyed your visit. Nice work Linda! Link to comment
jayanti 0 Posted March 7, 2012 Nice DoF, nice colors on the bird. I appreciate your decision to keep the upper branch with the leaves. Regards. Link to comment
ldavidson 4 Posted March 7, 2012 Thanks for commenting.Pnina, I was pleasantly surprised when walking through a grove of trees and almost walked right into this little guy. He just sat there on his branch and looked at me while I took his picture. There were quite a few birds that I encountered during our trip that did this. I guess they are getting used to posing for tourists.Kallol, thank you.Jayanti, thanks. I wanted to keep the feel of walking through the trees and coming upon this lovely little bird unexpectedly. Best wishes,Linda Link to comment
