If you're going for a high-contrast look, I think you've achieved it.  I wish I knew what the "classic" look was, and I can't comment from that perspective.  But you have enough light and detail that I know what's going on in the photograph.  It has a mysterious, almost eerie look to it (yes, dark shadows).

Thanks for your comments.  The "classic" reference I used relates to photos I have seen from the earlier part of the 20th century (can't give you a name) having the same type of high contrast but without intricate detail in the shadows.  The "mysterious" feel to this is a welcome reaction.  I appreciate your time once again.
