This was shot inside a greenhouse in Westmount Quebec positioning myself so that 30 cm of snow outside would be my background but with minimal detail due to the use of a wide aperture.

You just demonstrate that you  need not always a super-telephoto lens at its wide-open aperture to produce pure backgrounds like this to improve the artistic quality of an image. Perfect Tony - compliments!

Heresy?  I don't think it works to have things just-a-little out.  Also, the blur of the slightly blurry bits tends to look kind of artificial to me.

I love the composition, though.  It looks for-all-the-world like one of those old botanical books, pale colour and all. best, j

There is a certain softness to the image which I find very pleasing to the eye and  I am  comfortable with the portions that not crisply in focus . Another winner Tony.

the technical way to realize this image is obviously very important and - here -perfect. But, as a friend of mine used to say, "you can buy cameras, you can learn techik, but you cant buy eyes". What is admirable in this photo is the choose of the subject. the way how leaves go from a sort of death to a magnificient appeal, underlined also by their progressive dimension, make the photo unique

El, Jamie Richard, Museeb, Sarah, Linda and Andrea - all those kind words are likely to make a fella go all soft. It is gratifying when you try taking images and it strikes a nice chord to those viewing it.

Andrea - I do like to walk around the flower before even picking up the camera. Some days I am blank and it becomes a point and shoot while other days, I find something different.

All the very best,

Jamie - I was going for the pale look. I was just reorganizing my Fall folders here at PN and I found some images so colorful that I was happy to come to this pale one (*_*).

Tony, two things:

1) the incongruousness (sp?) of snow as a background for an orchid...hehe

2) I like the way here you can see the orchid progressively dying as it goes down the stem. Normal way to go, sure, but it's quite and interesting sequence here in this pic.

Regards

Doug

Doug - thanks. Just close your eyes and imagine the snowy background as a overcast sky with very white clouds and I was lying on the ground in a bed of mud with a rattlesnake shaking its tail just 6 feet away. (*_*)

I really do appreciate your visit and comment on a very sunny day here in Montreal with temps of about 66 (19) degrees. All the very best,
