yanzhang 1 Posted February 11, 2012 Taken this morning. After a whole week heavy rains, this morningshowed a dramatic sky in the coast during the sunrise time. After awhile, it was raining again. Thanks for viewing this image. Link to comment

richard_john_edwards 0 Posted February 11, 2012 Very good image Yan, it pays off to get out with this sort of weather. Where is the scene.? Link to comment
llgarcia 1 Posted February 12, 2012 The drama is there both from the ocean and sky. Wonderful landscape. Link to comment
john_mcmillin 0 Posted February 12, 2012 A nice moment!I wouldn't call it "wild," though. The time exposure makes the ocean surface seem very smooth and calm. The water moving across the foreground rocks makes me think of a title like "Ocean Getting Up and Walking Around" instead... Link to comment
yanzhang 1 Posted February 12, 2012 Thanks for your comments. Richard: this is in the east coast of Sydney area.John: Thanks for your title suggestion, I like it. Regards, Yan Link to comment
stp 6 Posted February 13, 2012 Wow, what a marvelous foreground! The water running through the multiple crevices in the rocks is really eye-catching. The long exposure worked well for the water as well as the clouds. I know you wanted to direct the viewer's attention to the foreground; I'd like to compare this to a version with a bit lighter touch on the burning (that's an assumption on my part) of the rocks on the left and the uppermost sky. The question I'd be asking is whether more balance in the distribution of light can still maintain the emphasis on the foreground rocks. On the other hand, we are looking at whitewater, so perhaps this is the natural balance of light -- I just don't have enough experience with these kinds of scenes and exposures to know for sure. plangereis 0 Posted February 13, 2012 I have always been a big fan of your images, Ya. This one is no different. I like the balance in this image, and how the movement in the water is in some ways reflected in the clouds in the sky. The only thing I am missing is a littel more contrast between the foreground and background, especially the rocky point on the left. I understand that the shelf where the water is flowing onto cannot be adjusted much in terms of contrast as the water in long exposures has this effect, but maybe a little more punch in the area I mentioned would provide just a little separation from the rest of the image. Nicely done.PaulPS: How long was the exposure on this one? Link to comment
yanzhang 1 Posted February 13, 2012 Stephen: Thanks for your comments. I agree with your opinion that the left rock and upper sky are bit over dark. In fact, after I posted image here, I have adjusted this a bit. A new version can be viewed from here:http://yanzhangphotography.com/p490982337/h152eeff4#h152eeff4 Paul: thanks for your comments. I guess you have a similar comment about the contrast ato Stephen's, see my response to Stephen. In terms of exposure, in fact, this image was a result from stitching and blending several successive shots with different exposure times. The main reason for doing this is: the frame is not big enough to capture both water and sky, so I made three shots to cover the hight of this image. The exposure of sky is about 2 minutes, while the foreground wave traces were captured around 1.5 seconds. Regards, Yan. Link to comment
stp 6 Posted February 14, 2012 Yan, I think the elements (foreground, rocks on left, sea, and sky) of your revision form a more cohesive and integrated scene, yet that integration doesn't detract at all from the striking foreground, which I think is the heart of the photograph. I think the revision is more complete and still retains all of the power and beauty. All IMO, of course. Link to comment
