No photoshop manipulation, this time the voodoo is via a Sima 100mm f2 Soft Focus lens.

At one point of my life I thought being a "fine arts" bird

photographer would be an easy way to make a living. I soon found that

several thousand photographers with much more talent then I had

thought the same thing. This is one of the few good bird shots I've

taken (IMHO!). The only PhotoShopping in this shot is some dodging

and burning. To get this look I used a $25 lens to take this shot.

Once again it proves that you don't always need big glass to

photograph birdsits much more important to know the habits of the

birds your shooting, that and to know how to use the equipment you

have at hand.

Personally, I'm a little bit tired of tons of herons uploaded on photo.net in their "native habitat" (as well noticed recently by Back Shooter). However, it's not about heron. It's like magic bird from fairy tale. I also like your remarks about equipment. I'm pretty sure that not expensive cameras and lenses make a difference, but talant. For me this picture is one more evidence in favour of that. Very pleasant image, don't know why it reminds me about childhood, fairy tales, wizards...

I agree 100% with Vlad; Everyone has a heron photograph, the world seems over run with them. This one is different. Yes, it's like a fairy tale or dream. As an aside; I've borrowed this $25 lens from Jim and my photo's didn't all come out this good!

Where's the watch, and did you use a Nikon portrait lens to take it? ;).

I like the the soft focus. Very dreamy.

Holga in a dream-state? The soft focus brings out the colours and the movement of the bird. I like it.
