You're on the right track as you got that golden light in the trees. I'd like to see more of the foreground cropped out. It's too dark and detracts from the light in the trees. Sometimes that juxtaposition works, as it does for the trees and the clouds, but I don't think it does with the foreground. I see a really good photo when I scroll down to just below the small trees.

I like the way the snow in shade has a purple cast but the snow in sunlight, at the hill-top, is bright white.

The areas mid-ground and sunlit contrast nicely with the dark sky and shaded foreground.

The sunlight on the birch trees makes them stand out against the overcast sky behind them.

The late afternoon or early morning sun was at just the right angle to get the best from this scene.

The image evokes the viewer to walk to the top of the hill for the warmth of the sun (or the cold of the wind!)

I wish I made this photo.

 Thank you all for commenting.

Christine, thank you so much for the advice. I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to do this. I will try cropping out the more of the foreground as you suggest. My thinking at the time was the shadows that lay across the road with the ribbons of light was a nice counter balance to the trees. Looking at this again I realized I posted the wrong version... sigh. I dodged and burned the shadows and light so that it was more dramatic. This is the one I meant to post.

Best wishes,

Linda

Thank you all for your encouragement. It is good to hear your thoughts.

Ben, I am going to try cropping this. As you can see above I posted the wrong version. They were sitting next to each other. If two people suggest cropping then I should try cropping. I won't re-post it though. Thanks so much for the advice.

Jamie, thank you. It's good to hear from you.

J, you are right, it was late afternoon, just before the sunset, on a beautiful, warm sunny winter day. This is my favorite time of day to go out shooting. I love the long shadows that are cast at this time. The sunrise shadows are wonderful too, but I never seem to able to get out the door at 5 am.

Thank you all again, Linda

You've received some excellent feedback on this compositon Linda. It is very appealing to me. The lighting is excellent  and truly adds 'flavour' to the image. I can see why you would stop to take this shot. Winter is long and any image that 'catches our eye' and inspires 'warms the heart and soul'.

Thanks so much for sharing Linda,

Warmest regards, Gail

OK, I'm going to try this again.  I looked back at this wonderful shot but didn't see my comment.. guess I rushed and failed to finish the process.

So, the colors are nothing short of spectacular and the composition is wonderful.

I like the shadowing that you added in the foreground to set off the rest of the image.  It was surely cold but mmm what a fine place to sit and watch the lighting change.. over a fine glass, some cheese and yeah!

Nice work Linda.

Thank you both so much for taking the time to view and comment.

Steve, I sometimes forget to confirm comments especially when it is late and I am tired. We don't get a lot of snow in this part of the country, and when we do the sky is usually dull and grey.  So when we get sunshine and snow together I like to get out and photograph it. I love the winter colours, the blues, purples and golds are gorgeous.

Patsy, thank you, I am glad to hear that you like it.

Good Morning Linda, Beautiful wintery scene, nice composition, the nicest feature of this image however is the great light coming from the left. Nice work. Take care.

Holger

Thank you. It's nice to hear from. Just before sunrise or sunset are supposed to be the "golden" hours. I love to shoot landscapes when the sun is low and the shadows are long and dramatic.

Best wishes,

Linda

I like this version specifically because it is more subtle.  I first enjoyed the ribbons of light laying across the road so beautifully.  I love birch trees, and these are so beautiful partially sun-kissed against the cloudy sky looming like a marker, dwarfing the illuminated bits behind.  The tracks on the road are wonderful because they work with the relative open space to suggest a path or the road less traveled, which excites the imagination because it implies a pioneer freedom.  The golden hues throughout this composition warms the scene

I had a glimps on the previous brighter version ,before it changed ,and I was sorry to see it gone as I liked the bright light of snowy winter with the sky having more contrast. It is a very beautiful winter scene. Can you upload the previous one ( if you have it still). I would like to see them side by side and  see if I'm right....;-)) in any event it is a very nice composition.

Thanks for your interest in this image. This is the original. The one posted below is the one where I darkened the shadow across the road to add drama. Sorry about the confusion.

Although so many elements of this photo are great, I believe it's the contrasting dark overcast sky which make the image so compelling.
